New Production: “The Emperor of Atlantis”

In 1944, inmates at the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt produced an opera. Its central conflict lay between Death and The Emperor.

In 2009, in co-production with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, we will give its British Columbia premiere at the Norman Rothstein Theatre.

This is an extraordinary and deeply moving chamber opera.

Composed by Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944), with text by Petr Kien (1919-1944), ‘Der Kaiser von Atlantis’ is an alternating current of horror and beauty, the surreal and the authentic, the imagination and its consequences.

You may never before have experienced an evening of opera as wondrous as this. ‘The Emperor of Atlantis’ is deeply humane, a powerful reminder, a shattering, and finally a hope.

More information will be coming soon.
